The NYC Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) aims to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety by eliminating the existing crossover under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) at Park Avenue and Grand Avenue, creating a new public space accessible to the surrounding community.
Task 1: Traffic Study Program
BvF provided Traffic Design Services, including data collection, traffic analysis using Synchro software, and developing vehicular and pedestrian flow maps for peak hours. The team also conducted crash/collision data analysis and prepared a comprehensive report with findings and design recommendations.
Task 2: Pedestrian Safety Improvements at the Crossover
BvF served as the prime consultant, conducting traffic studies and designing safety improvements. The scope included:
- Traffic Signal System Design: Preliminary and final traffic signal plans, including signal timing, phasing, and engineering estimates.
- Street Lighting System Design: Photometric calculations and street lighting plans in compliance with NYC DOT and other standards.
- Unified Stormwater Design: Conceptual design and calculations for stormwater management, including SMP design plans and erosion control.
- Landscape/Urban Design: QA/QC and design management for urban design and landscaping, including tree inventory and mitigation.
This project enhances safety and repurposes space below the BQE, providing a valuable public area for the community.
